Greater Roanoke -- once known for Big Lick salt marches -- attracts shoppers, seemingly without a lick of effort, given its abundance of boutique, specialty shop, warehouse and mall allure. The Roanoke Farmers Market, Virginia's oldest such market in continuous service, supplies fresh produce, seeds, Virginia wines, garden tools, and more. Also on Market Street, Emerson Creek Pottery supplies Virginia-made hand-painted items and other unusual gifts at outlet prices. Black Dog Salvage stakes claims as the cat's meow for Roanoke's best kept secret warehouse, packed with architectural antiques, custom mantles, stained glass, statuary, wrought iron, vintage hardware, plumbing parts, and whatnot. Roanoke Antique Mall, on Orange Avenue, features more than 100 dealers. On Campbell Avenue, the non-profit Binaba Shop specializes in authentic handmade African jewelry, fabric, and clothing as a joint venture between Kingdom Life Ministries and St. John's Episcopal Church. Also on Campbell, Orvis Roanoke Retail provides fly fishing equipment, men's and women's country casual apparel, gifts, and canine products.

Tanglewood Mall, anchored by Belk, JCPenney, Goody's, SteinMart, and T.J. Maxx, also has Barnes & Noble, Kroger, and a 10-screen cinema. Valley View Mall, anchored by Belk, Hecht's, JCPenney and Sears, is southwest Virginia's largest mall with more than 100 shops including Fink's Jewelers, Hollister, assorted Gaps, and a Guest Services center with complimentary wheelchair rental. In Vinton, Walnut Avenue Antique Mall, on Jackson Avenue, specializes in depression and carnival glass, furniture, baskets, oil lanterns, quilts and Amish furniture. In Rocky Mount, Blue Ridge Antique Center sells glassware, linens, china, collectibles and Tom Seely hand-crafted furniture. In Paint Bank on Route One, the Paint Bank General Store Gift Shop stocks hunting and fishing supplies, gifts, and yule items all year long. Downtown Salem yields antique stores, boutiques, and the Salem Farmers' Market, with fruit, vegetables and seasonal treats.
